Starting your musical journey with us is a simple and personalized three-step process designed to ensure the best possible fit for every student:
Schedule Your Discovery Session: The first step is to contact us to schedule a complimentary 30-minute discovery session for the student. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet, discuss your goals, and for you to experience the studio environment.
Review Your Custom Plan: Following the evaluation, you will receive a customized student agreement for your review and signature. This document will clearly outline all studio policies, tuition details, and your student's unique, custom-tailored lesson plan developed by Maria.
Begin Your Lessons: Once you return the signed agreement, we will activate your personal Teachworks online portal and schedule your first official lesson. You will receive an email with instructions on how to log in and manage your musical journey with us.
Think of the discovery session as a friendly and collaborative "musical meet and greet." This dedicated time is the cornerstone of our personalized approach. For students, it's a chance for Maria to get to know their personality, understand their unique interests and learning style, and assess any prior musical experience they may have. She will show them how a piano works, and may hear them play if they have had prior lessons. For parents and adult learners, it's an opportunity to meet Maria, ask questions, see the studio, and get a feel for our teaching philosophy. The primary goal of this session is to gather the insights needed to develop a truly personalized lesson plan that will inspire and motivate the student from day one.
Depending on which teacher will be working with your child, you may take lessons from our home studio in Grand Lakes, or in our studio space located at FM 723 and Bellaire Blvd, by Lakes of Bella Terra.
While many children are ready for private lessons around the age of five, the best time to start is based more on developmental readiness than on chronological age. Key indicators of readiness include the ability to focus for short periods, follow simple instructions, and a basic recognition of the letters of the alphabet. Some children may be ready at five, while others may benefit from waiting another year or two. The complimentary evaluation session is the perfect, no-pressure way to determine if now is the right time for your child to begin their piano journey.
Absolutely! We enthusiastically welcome adult learners to the studio and maintain a limited number of spots specifically for them. We understand that adults come to the piano with unique goals—whether it's to fulfill a lifelong dream, pick up a new hobby for relaxation, or revisit skills from childhood. Our approach for adults is supportive, flexible, and non-judgmental. Lessons are tailored to your personal musical interests and designed to fit into your busy schedule, providing a rewarding and enjoyable creative outlet.
Lessons range from 30 to 60 minutes based on your student's age, learning pace, and individual needs. Most students start with shorter sessions and gradually move to 45 or 60-minute lessons as their skills and confidence develop.
Our teaching philosophy is centered on developing the whole person through the joy of music. We believe that learning piano is a powerful vehicle to "enhance cognitive development, build self-confidence, nurture creativity, and instill discipline." Maria acts as a dedicated guide for each student, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment where they can reach their full musical potential. Our ultimate goal is not just to teach students how to play the piano, but to nurture a deep and lasting love of music by tailoring every aspect of the learning process to the individual student's needs, interests, and goals.
Yes! Your child will study music theory while also learning how to play the piano.
Students at Allegro Studio receive a comprehensive and well-rounded music education. Lessons go far beyond simply learning to play songs. The curriculum is built on a strong foundation of essential musical skills, including:
Proper Piano Technique: Developing correct hand position, posture, and touch to produce a beautiful tone and play with ease.
Music Theory: Understanding the "language" of music, including notes, scales, chords, and harmony, using age-appropriate resources.
Sight-Reading: The crucial skill of being able to read and play new music accurately.
Ear Training: Developing the ability to recognize notes, intervals, and melodies by ear.
Artistry and Expression: Learning to play with musicality, dynamics, and emotion. While the foundational principles are consistent, the specific repertoire and teaching materials are always customized to align with the student's personal tastes and goals, ensuring that they are engaged and excited to learn.
We believe that a strong foundation in classical technique provides the tools necessary to play any style of music with proficiency and artistry. Therefore, our core instruction is rooted in classical methodology. However, we are passionate about nurturing each student's individual musical tastes. Once foundational skills are established, lessons are adapted to explore a wide variety of genres that the student is excited about, including popular, contemporary, jazz, and blues.
Having a quality instrument for daily practice is one of the most critical factors for a student's success. To develop proper finger strength, technique, and dynamic control, we recommend that every student has, at a minimum, a full-size digital piano with 88 weighted, touch-sensitive keys and a sustain pedal. While an acoustic piano is always the ideal instrument for its nuanced touch and tone, a quality digital piano is an excellent and affordable alternative for students at all levels.
Small, non-weighted keyboards with fewer than 88 keys are not suitable for long-term study as they can hinder technical development and make it difficult for a student to transition to a real piano. We are happy to provide specific recommendations for suitable instruments upon request.
Consistent, quality practice is the key to making progress. Our philosophy emphasizes "little and often" rather than sporadic, long sessions. The goal is to make piano practice a regular part of the student's weekly routine. For young beginners, we typically start with a goal of 10-15 minutes of focused practice, five days a week. As the student advances, this time will gradually increase. Specific, achievable practice goals will be clearly outlined in the student's assignment book after each lesson. The emphasis is always on the consistency of the habit, not just the clock.
Parental support is invaluable, and we view parents as our essential "practice partners," especially for our younger students. Your role is not to be a second teacher, but to be a source of encouragement and support. The most effective ways you can help your child succeed are by:
Establishing a Routine: Help your child find a consistent time and a quiet space for daily practice.
Providing Encouragement: Celebrate their effort and progress, no matter how small. A positive and supportive attitude is contagious.
Staying Informed: For parents of young children, you are always welcome and encouraged to sit in on lessons. This helps you understand the weekly assignments and how to best offer support at home. Your partnership is key to creating a positive learning environment where your child can flourish.

Yes, we operate year-round with two semesters: January-June and July-December. Our schedule generally aligns with the Katy ISD calendar for major holidays including Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
Summer lessons are an integral part of our program. Consistent practice and instruction throughout the year helps students maintain their skills and continue building momentum. Taking extended breaks often leads to regression and can disrupt the learning process.
Your tuition reserves a dedicated time slot exclusively for your student, so we cannot provide refunds or credits for missed lessons. However, we offer two make-up lessons per semester as a courtesy, scheduled at the end of the semester. We also use the PracticeSpace app to provide virtual lessons when students cannot attend in person, ensuring continuity in their musical education. If the teacher needs to cancel, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at no additional cost.
We host two studio recitals annually—one in summer (June/July) and one in winter (November/December). These events give students meaningful goals to work toward while celebrating their progress with family and friends. Performing builds confidence and stage presence, so participation is strongly encouraged for all students.
We also organize guest jury panels throughout the year, where qualified musicians provide valuable feedback to help students grow and refine their skills.
Your child's progress is documented in your Teachworks account, complete with notes, suggestions and assignments. You will receive an email after each lesson with notes about your child's progress.
